Dixon
Expansion Joints
and Control Rods

Expansion Joints are designed to alleviate stresses caused by thermal expansion and contraction in piping systems and to reduce noise and vibration. The flexibility of these durable Expansion Joints permits the connecting of misaligned piping which is caused by worn parts, foundations settling or in the operating of systems and mechanical equipment.

The flanges are made of rubber constructions to resist stresses and provide a tight seal with the companion pipe flanges, eliminating the need for gaskets. The flanges are full flat-faced ANSI Class 125#. The drilling pattern is also compatible with Class 150# flanges. Expansion Joints may also be made to meet Coast Guard and Military specifications.

Expansion Joints are constructed of the following Elastomers: Pure Gum Rubber, Neoprene, Hypalon, Polyure-thane, Chlorobutyl, Buna-N, Viton and EPIDM. Control Rods and Retaining Rings are Galvanized Steel.

Anchoring: It is absolutely necessary that rigid metal pipe on both ends of the connector be properly anchored to

eliminate the danger of excessive elongation. Anchors should always be installed. An Expansion Joint should never

be used to support the piping.

Retaining Rings: Galvanized 3/8" split steel retaining rings should be installed on rubber flanged Expansion Joints to

assure a pressure-tight seal. These are placed directly against the inside of the flange to prevent damage to the

rubber surface when bolts are tightened and also to provide equal distribution of bolting stresses. These rings are split

and drilled to match the rubber flange holes. The outside diameter is the same as the standard flange and contains

the same number of bolt holes. Those used on sizes up to 8" are two-piece, two segments per joint.

Control Units: Expansion Joints installed in piping systems must be rigidly anchored on both sides of the unit to

control expansion and contraction. The anchoring must be capable of withstanding the line thrusts generated by

internal pressure or wide temperature fluctuations. If it is not practical to install anchors, Control Units (Control

Rods, Gusset Plates and Nuts) must be employed.

All Expansion Joints come with Retaining Rings. Control Rods must be purchased separately.
