Industrial
Thermometers
The contents of this catalog describe
our general line of Industrial Thermometers; precision
instruments ruggedly constructed for accurate lasting
service. Our more than one hundred years of experience in
design and manufacturing liquid-in-glass thermometers is
your assurance of the highest quality and reliability of
our products.
What are the necessary features of a well built
Industrial Thermometer?
ACCURACY
Accuracy of a thermometer is composed of two
characteristics. 1. That which is apparent to the
observer at a particular instant. 2. That which is
intrinsic to the instrument. Apparent accuracy can
readily be measured. Intrinsic accuracy is the hidden
qualities built into a thermometer and, for all practical
purposes, evaluated only by experience or laboratory
testing. This intrinsic accuracy, incorporated in all
Weiss thermometers, comprises the following:
A. CORRECT ANNEALING OF THE GLASS TUBE. This
helps to eliminate breakage of strains produced in glass
during manufacture. Of utmost importance is the annealing
of the bulb of high range instruments to stabilize the
glass, thus preventing the change of shape or dimension
of the bulb which assures constant accuracy of the
thermometer while in operation.
B. CLEAN MERCURY, FREE FROM MOISTURE. The
purest mercury obtainable is used in our thermometers.
Our fabricating techniques assure a moisture-free filling
of all our instruments.
READABILITY
Readability of a thermometer is composed of two
separate but distinct factors-both equally important.
A. THE INDICATING MEDIUM MUST BE EASILY IDENTIFIED.
For optimum readability Weiss thermometers are
constructed with the "red-reading" mercury
glass tube. By reflective principle, the mercury in the
tubing appears as a broad red stripe and presents a
strong contrast to the jet black markings and numerals of
the scale.
B. THE SCALE MARKINGS MUST BE BOLD AND LEGIBLE. Our
unique method of scale manufacture and custom designing
provided properly proportioned, large black numerals and
distinct black scale line markings.
This permanently marked scale enables easy on-the-job
readability for quick, accurate temperature measurement.
DURABILITY
A primary consideration of durability is corrosion and
shock resistance. Both the high pressure die cast
aluminum, finished in baked green epoxy enamel and the
black Valox (R) case provides protection against surface
deterioration and continuous vibration. The smooth finish
keeps the instrument new for years and needs only a damp
cloth to brighten.
SOCKET
Separable sockets are used to provide pressure tight
connections where required. They also offer the advantage
of allowing a thermometer to be removed from a system
without disturbance. The thermometer is inserted and
tightened to the separable socket by means of a threaded
swivel nut coupling. Quick response to temperature change
is assured since the stem and socket are precision
tapered, providing a metal to metal contact at the
sensitive bulb section. To withstand severe corrosive
conditions, sockets machined of special materials are
available. Pipe threads on separable sockets can be
located at different points on the stem. Thread location
determines the insertion length and the length available
for insulation.
